Three practical rules for teenagers on family trips:

No required-attendance activities before 11am. Family breakfast at 8:30 with a teenager is unrealistic. Family activity at 9:30 with a teenager engaged and pleasant is unrealistic. If something requires the teenager to be present, schedule it for 11am or later. Earlier requirements produce a zombie who is bad company and a frustrated family who wonders why they bothered.

Late evenings work well. The teenager's biological peak alertness window is approximately 3pm to 10pm. On the phone issue: Screen use late at night does meaningfully delay sleep onset in teenagers — the blue light from devices suppresses melatonin onset. Most adults are not at either extreme. The population bell curve peaks at a moderate evening preference — natural sleep onset around 11:30pm and natural wake around 7:30am. But the 20 to 30 percent at either tail have meaningfully different needs, and a family trip involving one strong lark and one strong owl has different requirements than a trip with two moderate types.

The mistake couples most commonly make is the mutual early-alarm agreement: "we'll both get up at 6:30 to make the most of the holiday." For a lark-lark couple, fine. Grandparents: The Early-Rising, Fragmented-Sleep Generation

Adults over approximately 65 experience characteristic changes in sleep architecture that make multi-generational travel planning require specific attention: earlier sleep onset, earlier wake time, shorter consolidated sleep blocks, more frequent night waking, and increased need for daytime napping.
