Newham to Greenwich Ship Tier by Taxi: A Cruise Passenger's Guide (2026)
Most people picture Southampton or Dover when they think about joining a cruise. But some sailings start right in the middle of London, from a mooring on the Thames at Greenwich. If you're setting off from Newham, whether that's Stratford, Canning Town, the Royal Docks, East Ham or Beckton, the Greenwich Ship Tier is only about 4.5 miles away. It's still a trip worth planning properly: it crosses the river, cruise luggage is bulky, and the ship won't wait.
Here's what the Greenwich Ship Tier actually is, how the journey from Newham works, and how to time a Newham to Greenwich Ship Tier taxi so you arrive relaxed rather than rushing for the tender.

What is the Greenwich Ship Tier?
The Greenwich Ship Tier is a mooring in the middle of the Thames, roughly five miles downstream of Tower Bridge and close to the Old Royal Naval College and the Cutty Sark. It's the largest of central London's cruise moorings, able to take ships of up to around 228 metres, which makes it popular with smaller and luxury cruise lines such as Viking and Silversea.
Because ships moor in the river rather than alongside a quay, passengers are usually ferried between the ship and Greenwich Pier by tender boat. In practice, your road journey starts or ends near Greenwich Pier, right beside the Cutty Sark. Always check your cruise line's embarkation instructions for the exact meeting point and check-in time, and share them with us when you book.

The road from Newham to Greenwich
Newham is north of the Thames and Greenwich is on the south bank, so every journey involves a river crossing, usually through the Blackwall Tunnel or the newer Silvertown Tunnel, which opened in April 2025. Both tunnels now carry a user charge for most of the day (they're free overnight, between 10pm and 6am). With Rushxo, tolls and zone charges are already built into your fixed fare, so nothing is added at the end.
There are other ways across. The cable car links the Royal Docks in Newham with Greenwich Peninsula, and the DLR runs to Cutty Sark station. Both are great for a day out, but with cruise-sized suitcases, changes, lifts and busy platforms quickly make them hard work.

Timing: work back from all-aboard, not the sailing time
Cruise travel has its own arithmetic: the ship leaves on time, with or without you. The most useful thing you can tell us is your cruise line, ship and check-in or all-aboard time. We plan your pickup backwards from that, with the tender queue and the walk to check-in built in, rather than working from the advertised departure time.
- Early mornings are the quietest time on the roads, and journey times are at their shortest.
- Weekday rush hours take the top of the 18–30 minute window, so leave a sensible margin.
- Whatever the clock says, your fare is fixed. There's no night surcharge, and any weekend peak adjustment is already included in the quote you see.
Pack the car for the cases, not just the people
Cruise luggage is real luggage: formal wear, shoes and a week or two of outfits. Our honest rule is to count suitcases before people.
- A couple with two large cases fits comfortably in a saloon.
- Add golf clubs, a buggy or a family's worth of cases, and a people carrier (MPV) earns its modest premium straight away.
- Groups of up to eight can travel together in an 8- or 9-seater, with all the luggage in one vehicle and a lower cost per head than two cars.
Not sure? Tell us the number of passengers and cases when you book and we'll suggest the right vehicle, rather than leaving you to find out at the kerb.

Coming home: disembarkation pickups
A ship full of passengers doesn't empty in ten minutes, and tender transfers add their own queue. For your return from the Greenwich Ship Tier, give us your ship and planned disembarkation time. We track the ship and have your driver in position for your agreed exit time, with waiting built around the reality of getting off a cruise.
Book both legs together and the round trip costs 1.8 times the single fare, a built-in 10% saving.
